Irene: Amtrak and airline flights are mostly back to normal

Japan to lift power-saving decree earlier than planned

Channel News Asia reports: Restrictions on power use in and around Tokyo will be lifted two weeks earlier than scheduled thanks to an improved supply and demand balance as the peak summer heat eases, the government said Tuesday.

Gulf Air A320 skids off the runway in India

Eturbo news reports: Several people were injured on early Monday morning when an Airbus 320 belonging to Gulf Air skidded off the runway at an airport in southwest India, the airline said. 

Group calls for huge protest in Cairo

UPI reports: Young Egyptian activists called Monday for a huge demonstration in Cairo to demand, among other things, an end to military trials of civilians.

Marsh fire smoke blankets New Orleans

CNN reports: A pesky marsh fire that has consumed hundreds of acres continued to burn Tuesday in an isolated corner of eastern New Orleans, sending smoke and haze drifting downtown.

Bear shot near crowded festival

UPI reports: A black bear was shot and killed Sunday after getting too close to a downtown street festival in Uniontown, Pa., police say.
